ABOUT NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with a disability, their families and carers. The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disabilities early to improve their outcomes later in life. The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind that if their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need. In addition, the NDIS supports people with disabilities to build skills and capability to participate in the community and employment.

Different plans offered by the NDIS
There are three ways plans are managed within the NDIS.
Self-Managed Plans give you complete control over when and where you use your NDIS funds. In addition, being self-managed allows you to choose any provider you prefer regardless of their NDIS registration status. This option is for those who want greater control over who provides their support and are happy to coordinate it themselves.
Agency Managed Plans hands control of your funding to the NDIA. As a participant, you choose the provider and what services you want to avail from them. The NIA will process and pay your invoices on your behalf.
Plan Managed Plans hands over the management of your plan to a specific organisation. This organisation will look after the management and payment of your supports. The NDIS will pay your Plan Manager, who will pay the support providers they have organised for you.
A combination of the above three options can be used together.
